It has been a month since the school adopted new sixth form time table. There are two major changes in the time table as compared with the former system. The first change is the introduction of a new feature, Research and Colloquium (R&C), in the time table.

Students have to carry out a research project in group of 5 to 6 student, guided by a teacher. Two periods per week are allocated for R&C in the time table. It is hoped that with the training undertaken by students during pre-U period, the students will be better equipped and ready for their university days.

The second change in the sixth form schooling system is the integration of co-curriculum activities in the school time table. Four periods per week of co-curriculum activities are arranged and carried out during the school hours. Students carry out two periods of Club/Society activities on Monday whereas Uniform Body activities are held on Tuesday.

The response of teachers and students towards the new sixth form time table has been positive thus far. It is hoped that with the new features in the time table, form sixth students will play a more active and leading role in the school, become more involved in community-based projects and aware of national as well as international issues. In other words, hopefully they will be more rounded in terms of personality.

The year 2010 sees a new chapter in the schooling system of SMJK Jit Sin. There are changes in the organisational structure of Form Six programme.

Soft skills have been added to the six form programme. Research/colloquium element has been introduced to prepare students when they further their studies in universities or colleges and to cope with working environment.

Co curriculum activities which were formerly out of the formal time table are now included in the school time table.

With the new elements, there are some adjustment to the time table for six form classes. The new time table will be used for both Lower and Upper Six classes in the coming 2010 academic year.

On 19 October 2009 (Monday), while other students were having their extra holiday in conjunction with Deepavali holiday, Form 4 ICT students were busy doing their practical lessons to assemble computer. It is part of the ICT syllabus where students learn to assemble a complete computer system unit.

After assembling the hardware components, the students had to partition and format hard disk. It is then followed by installing operating system, application software and utility programs.

ICT students have started to write in through emails inquiring on news report that SPM students will be allowed to register only 10 subjects starting from 2010 SPM exam. It is true that the Education Minister has already made the announcement. However, there are other views expressed by relevant parties like the National Union of Teaching Profession(NUTP) which proposes 12 subjects as the limit. Then there are also educational organizations which express worries that the limit of 10 subjects will affect the number of students taking up Chinese subject.

We will have to wait for the official letter on the matter. There might be changes.

If the decision on the limit of 10 subjects in SPM is final, the school will explore various options on ways students interested in ICT can sit for the subject in SPM exam. Right now, it is early to discuss on that matter.

As such, the current batch of Form 4 ICT students must remain calm and be patient. As soon as the official letter is received and the final decision is made, you will be the first one to know.

A few weeks have passed since I last wrote on the Star Rating on Jit Sin teachers’ blogs. As expected, I received a number of comments and opinions. Well, as mentioned earlier, it is not easy to put up such a rating, especially one that is supposed to be comprehensive, objective and fair. Browsing through each and every of the 200 blogs takes time and really tests your patience!

Frankly, I expect more comments and even objections! The number of feedback received reflects the number of readers who visited the teachers’ blogs. There are some disagreements which is natural, of course. Everybody has his/her own character and opinion, which is what makes the world interesting, isn’t it?

Any positive response to the rating? Well, we welcome two members of the staffs, namely Pn Agnes Lim and Miss Chong Lee Ling on board. Pn Agnes has put up some useful tips and informations for the students especially those who just sat for their SPM and STPM exams.

Bravo to Mr Tan Chin Yee and Pn Ng Yow Teng. They actively continue to put up rich information. Mr Tan’s blog has attracted 24,155 visitors at blog time. I believe most of them are students who are eagerly looking for useful information which can help in their studies and scholarship.

Of course there are others like Mr Goay Teck Chong, Pn Tan Min Min, Pn Chow Yin Looi, Mr Wong Siew Kong and many more who continue to update and improve their blogs.

What surprised me is that our blogs do catch the eyes of other schools. One school in Penang called up to enquire on the creation of the blogs after seeing the work of Jit Sin blogs.

From now on, there won’t be any more rating on the teachers’ blogs. By now, staffs, students and even the public would have some ideas as to which blogs contain information they are interested to read.

Those who have already established their names will continue to draw readers to their blogs. Others will have to put up more efforts in order to attract attention.

The number of visitors is not the objective of setting up blogs. The main objective of setting up the blogs is to provide a platform for teachers to share their view, information and provide assistance to students.

We plan to extend this platform to student bodies in this school. I will write on that in my next article.

Meanwhile, happy holiday to everybody.

Just before the second “Latihan Dalam Perkhidmatan” to be held later this morning (18 April 2009), I decided to take a look at the various teachers’ blogs.

It is no surprise that those who are still active blogging are the old faces. However, among the old faces, a few have put up some useful articles and tips especially for the students! I hope the current active bloggers will continue their good work so as to attract more “new comers”.

I spent quite some time to go through most of the blogs (around 200 blogs). A lot of the blogs are still empty or very minimal. After going browsing through the blogs, I thought to myself: “Why not put up a rating for the blogs that I have browsed?”

If there is a rating on the blogs, students, teachers and the public who would like to take a look at Jit Sin teachers’ blogs will have an easier time. Instead of going through all the blogs, they can use the star rating as a guide to read the blogs. This will save them time.

I am not be an expert in judging blogs. Neither am I qualified to do so. Hence, the rating given here is only based on my personal knowledge and experience on blogs. I may miss out certain blogs and some judgement may be wrong. I don’t mean to belittle anyone. If there is any mistake, please help to point it out.

Congratulations to all the 2008 Form 5 Students who took ICT subject in the SPM exam. Out of 14 students who took the exam, 13 of them scored 1A and another one obtained 2A. 100% of the candidates scored grade A in the exam! This is an outstanding result indeed.

What pleases me the most is the fact that the students comprised of Science and Art students. They ranged from 5S1 to 5S9 classes and everyone excelled in the subject. It goes to show that Jit Sin students are good students. If they are committed and hard working, they can achieve wonders.

A high standard has been set. It is now up to the future students to maintain or even surpass the record. I hope it is seen as a challenge rather than as a pressure for the future batches of students.

A piece of advise to all students. Take up subjects you are interested. Once you have made up your mind, work hard, be disciplined and go for it!
